Many common blood tests give accurate results only when you have not eaten for a set time beforehand. This is called fasting. If you have been asked to fast, the way you prepare matters just as much as the test itself.

What does fasting actually mean?

Fasting for a blood test usually means no food and no drinks other than water for 8 to 12 hours before your sample is drawn. Water is fine and is actually encouraged, because staying hydrated makes the vein easier to find.

Which tests need it?

Fasting is most often needed for blood sugar (fasting glucose), HbA1c in some cases, lipid or cholesterol profiles, and certain liver and kidney panels. Not every test needs it. Always confirm with the laboratory which tests you are having and whether fasting applies to them.

A few practical tips

  • Finish your last meal the night before, then have nothing but water until after your sample is taken.
  • If you take regular medicines, ask your doctor whether to take them before or after your fasting test.
  • Book an early appointment if you can. A morning slot means you are not fasting through most of the day.
  • If you accidentally eat or drink something sweet, tell the lab. It is better to reschedule than to rely on a result that may be misleading.
