A lipid profile, also called a cholesterol test, measures the fats in your blood. Doctors use it to build up a picture of your heart and blood vessel health. Here is what the numbers on the report mean.

The main values

  • Total cholesterol is the sum of all the cholesterol measured in your blood.
  • LDL cholesterol is often called the bad cholesterol. High levels can lead to fatty deposits in the arteries.
  • HDL cholesterol is often called the good cholesterol. It helps carry cholesterol away from the arteries.
  • Triglycerides are a type of fat the body stores for energy. High levels are linked to diet and lifestyle.

What a single number does not tell you

A lipid result is best read as a whole, together with your age, blood pressure, whether you smoke, and any family history of heart disease. An isolated number on its own rarely tells the full story. Your doctor looks at the combination, not just one figure.

Why fasting matters here

Triglyceride levels rise noticeably after a meal, so fasting for 9 to 12 hours before a lipid profile gives the most reliable reading. Confirm the fasting requirement with the lab before you book.

What you can control

Diet, physical activity, weight and smoking all influence lipid levels. Results are a starting point for a conversation with your doctor about what you can do, not a verdict on their own.
